My family is going skiing in Angelfire New Mexico. We have never even seen snow before, However, we are all pretty athletic and play many sports.

We cannot make it work with our schedule to take skiing lessons. Plus we would all be split up for the day. Will we be able to at least ski enough to have some fun with out taking ski lessons?

  1. no you need to take lessons its only like 45mins long

  2. yeah sure you can, if you have a friend or parent to help you. I never took a lesson, my parents just showed me and i caught on. Its not that hard to pick up, all you have to do is practice.

  3. I went skiing with a group of people from church a couple of years ago when I was 15, my first time. It took a couple of times going down the mountain to get the hang of things but by the end of the day I was a s good as anyone else. If you can rollerblad, ice skate, or water ski you should be able to catch on quick. So yes, you can ski without lessons, but it helps if you go with someone who knows how and can show you a little bit.

  4. Depends on the ski resort.  Some places won't let minors ski if they haven't had at least the intro lesson.  It's a liability thing.

  5. Most resorts start ski school an hour after opening..... takea morning lesson.  You arent likely to have a ton of fun when you dont know the basics.  You will be able to ski all day together when the lesson is done.

  6. You prob. could get the hang of it with just going out there and practicing! ( esp. if ur athletic)

  7. Ask at the guest service phone before you arrive for a group lesson that will teach the whole family ( over 8)  in one group. Most ski schools will try to accommodate a group if it is an off peak request ( no weekends)  the group could be in an early morning time and allow you to ski as group in the afternoon.

  8. Skiing is pretty anti-intuitive, even if you are athletic. You can get seriously injured or killed if you don't know what you are doing. I would make time for a lesson to get the most out of it. If you are all beginners, you can all be in the same group and you wouldn't be split up.

Take a few runs down the bunny slopes to see if you can hack it. If you are all able to figure out the basics for yourself, then take a lesson. Depending on the size of the place and the crowds you can probably get an instructor for just your group and all stay together and have a lot of fun.

I've had a "group" lesson in Colorado that ended up being one other student and I with an instructor. I learned more that day than I had in the previous 10 time I went trying to ski without knowing what the h**l I was doing.

  9. You can, and I did. Took lessons later on, and it was tough to break some of the bad habits I had picked up. There are some basic things that you need to learn that are not natural. The lessons are actually fun usually.

  10. you could but lessons would be best to make sure you don't hurt yourself or anyone else when it was my first time i took lessons and it was a great decision on my part it helped alot

  11. The world is filled with morons who try skiing without learning how to next. Just take 2 hours and learn how to ski so some ski patroller doesent have to haul you off of the hill because you cant get down. Practice makes perfect!
