I live in a student house. Every room has one ethernet port on the wall. I'm just wondering if I can split that up into 2 or more ports? Is that what a switch is for?

You can purchase an Ethernet Split. If you want wireless you have to get a router. Here is a link to the $6 splitter -

  2. Yes, you can do that. Just buy a 10-20 dollar switch (you don't need a full-fledged router, and in fact, a router might not work) and things should be fine.

  3. An ethernet splitter will not work in your case, unless you only want to use one device at a time.  In order to use ethernet splitters, you must be able to connect one end to the router or switch, and the other to your devices (you use them in matched pairs only) A switch should work, but your network may not allow any devices that 'extend' the network.  It would be best if you asked first.
