Can I spray round-up or some other herbicide on a palm trunk to kill the ferns growing there?

I have a Phoenix palm that has fern growing in it, I need to get rid of the fern.

so pull it out gently... why would you need poisons???.... grief!!.... and NO, you can't use a herbicide on the trunk of a palm tree....if you kill it with herbicide, you STILL have to pull out the dead plant, right?... so skip the poison and just pull it out!!!.....

If you spray it with round up, the fern will come back up again unless you keep applying it. The most efficient way to remove it for good is to dig up the fern with the whole root system.
