I was homeschooled through out high school and I found it very enriching. Now I am currenty working on my BA degree to become a teacher. However, I have been talking with different parents through out the county and it seems that dozens of parents these days are turning towards homeschooling versus public schooling. I was wondering if I could legally homescool people's children. What step would I have to take in order to get there? Thank you for your help!

  1. In the state of North Carolina you have a "homeschool" if you teach your own children and up to one other family's children. Beyond that it your situation would be considered a private school,  and as such is subject to private school legislation. Check out your state's laws concerning this through the Home School Legal Defense Association.

  2. You can teach other people's children.

Homeschooling merely means that the parents and children drive the curriculum, rather than a school bureaucracy.

There are many, many people teaching homeschool classes, and they have many kinds of backgrounds.

The steps you would take depend on what you would like to teach.  I know a robotics engineer who quit his job and now runs a very successful science program for homeschool kids.

  3. If you are hired by one family, you would be a private tutor.  If you set up a one room classroom for more families, it would be a school.

You might find out how you can legally school other people's children in your area.

    Good luck :D

  4. I home-schooled my children all their lives. They have done very well. I don't think there is enough money if you are home-schooling other people's children. Most parents want to teach their own children and that is why they homeschool.  Higher math, chemistry, science are hard for a parent. That is when they seek a little help. I sent my children to a Christian School one day a week for science. The teacher that  taught at the school had to accept  a lower pay than where he was working before. He did the science class for home-schoolers.. each paid him 30 dollars per child I think. That was for 8 weeks. Keep talking to people, talk to Christians and visit some Christian schools, Independent Christian Schools, Baptist is good. There you will get some good info. Check the laws for your state on schooling. Good Luck Teaching is fun..

  5. Honestly, if parents are turning to homeschooling it most likely means they DO NOT want someone ese directing the education of their children.  There are a rare few however who would want to hire a private tutor. You can do that. You can also become a homebound teacher (though this isn't homeschooling) for kids who are too sick or have other circomstances that make them have to have their school brought to them in their home or in a hospital. Starting up a homeschool co-op is another option, but you probably can't make a career out of this. Just something to do on the side with other homeschool parents.

  6. I know that you can for sure do it with your own kids... I don't know about other peoples children.  I think that sounds like a great idea... my mother is a teacher, she says that wouldn't be considered home schooling since they aren't "at home" it would be consider private tutoring but the government would probably argue that the kids needed to be in school... I don't know... if you find out a way I'm also very interested good idea!
