Ok so my daughter has turned 18 this year. But she is still in school, not working and still at home. I am also still taking care of her. So my question is...Can I still add her to my taxes as a dependent?

  1. Minnesota here, and we claimed our daughter as dependent all the way thru college..we have a accountant so I'm guessing it was legal..lol

  2. Yes, you are still providing for her.

  3. yes

  4. I believe you can claim her as a dependent as long as your supporting her. When she starts working, she'll have to file for herself.

  5. yes you can.. if shes 18 and still going to school you can claim her..  i can also show you how you can claim a pet as a dependent..

  6. You can claim any child who lives in your household, no matter what their age.

  7. yea, as long as she's living with you and you have to support her, absolutely

  8. yes, up to age 21...as long  as she is in school.

  9. Yes, you can claim her as a dependent as long as she is a full time student up until the age of 23.

  10. yes as long as no one else is

  11. If you were claiming her exemption last year, and the only thing that has changed is that she will be 18, you will still claim her this year.

Once she turns 19, you cannot claim her as a child.  You would have to provide over half of her own support, plus she would have to have earned less than $3,400, in order for you to claim her.

  12. YES!!!!!!

  13. Assuming she lives with you over half the year, yes.  Time temporarily away at school counts as living with you if she does when she's not at school.

  14. As far as claiming her, the rules are outlined in IRS pub 501.

As a "qualifying child" you can claim her if she doesn't support herself and she is either a) under 19 on 12/31 or b) under 24 and a full-time student.  As a qualifying child, you can claim head of household filing status and EIC, if eligible.

Even if she was 19 and not in school, you could potentially claim her as a "qualifying relative."  She would have to make less than $3500 in 2008 and you would have to show how you supported her.  Since she is your daughter, you would still be eligible for HOH stautus.
