So I was 17 and very dumb and I got arrested for shoplifting a six pack of beer. I went to court and the charges were dropped. I plan on getting the arrest expunged. Can I still be a police officer after I finish my criminal justice degree??? I have no priors and deeply regret the crime.

  1. You'd be the best candidate with your life experiences on the job training.

  2. You will probably be okay.  Even if you expunge the record, the police department will have access to it.....law enforcement have access to expungements and dismissals.  So apply for your police position and be very honest when filling out the application and during the oral interview.  Be honest and express your regret, they will appreciate your honesty.

  3. No..

  4. A lot of interviewers will understand that young people make mistakes (haven't we all?). It's what you do recently and how you move on from it that they look for. As the first person said, just tell them that something that like might show up during the background check and they most likely won't hold it against you.

  5. Yes, just explain what happened truthfully.  We all make stupid decisions when we are young.

    Good luck.
