Question:

Can I still get a diploma without going to a traditional school?

I have been out of school for 2 years. When I departed from my highschool I was officially dropped to "home school", not drop out or anything. However I don't think I am regestered in any state to be homeschooled. Can I learn on my own still and be technically homeschooled? And if so, how would I go about getting a "certified" diploma, saying I have graduated?

  1. It depends on the state.

In Texas your parents can issue you a diploma as long as you've done all the work required.

A homeschooling diploma is good as a public/private school diploma.

  2. Are you still living with your parents? If so, work out with them what would make sense to study and they can issue you transcripts and a diploma. In many states, a homeschool diploma is no different than a private school diploma; furthermore, in most places, you can not get your homeschool diploma "certified" by the state, if that's what you mean. Some states have homeschool organizations which have specific standards and if you've met those, they will issue you a diploma from the homeschool organization.

Have you studied anything in the past 2 years you've homeschooled? If you have, you might be able to enroll for something like K12 or Connections Academy and not have to do the full high school course load. You'd have to talk to them, though, to know for sure. (You'd need to find out first if they exist where you live.)

And yes, you can still get a diploma from your parents (provided you are living with them) even if you are learning stuff on your own.

  3. Really, a homeschooler would only need a diploma if they intend to work immediately after highschool, and a diploma issued by the parents (non-accredited, but worth just as much) would be all they need along with possibly their transcript or SAT/ACT scores to back it up.

But as for going to college, homeschoolers get accepted to even the most selective universities in the country every year WITHOUT an accredited diploma or GED. Colleges don't care about these little award certificates. A university will only want to see a homeschooler's transcript, SAT/ACT scores, completed application, and a good ammount of extracurricular activities never hurts. Some schools may ask to see a bibliography of materials used in each subject, or ask for additional testing in certain subject areas, but they don't care about diplomas. Colleges realize that most homeschoolers do not work through an accredited school that gives a diploma, and this doesn't matter. They also realize that homeschoolers tend to perform up to three grade levels higher than public schoolers, are self motivated, independent, and mature individuals who tend to stand out, and that is why so many universities actively recruit homeschoolers WITHOUT diplomas or GEDs

  4. yes a continuation school is way easier shorter hours, and its the exact same diploma
