Question:

Can I still get a new (or newer) car??

I am on unemployment (ugh!) and have been VERY actively looking for a job. I know that unemployment looks bad because it eventually runs out. However, I think I can get a great cosigner with a great job history. He has been on the job for over a year and he's my brother. Can I still get a car?

Sigh... might as well tell you, my credit score is terrible. It rose to 499 from being 480 2 months ago, so I'm trying, but I still know it's bad. My brothers credit is great, he has all kinds of offers coming in for pre approved stuff. But he can't get a car because he doesn't have his license. ( I just got mine in mid July if that matters)

I have awesome work history, (puzzling why I can't get a job), btw. I want a car so I can look for a job in other areas besides by my house, and I'm looking for a night job, so I can't rely solely on public transportation. I am interested in the following cars in a 2007 or newer:

Nissan Murano, Altima, Maxima

Honda Civic, Accord

Chrysler 300

Toyota Corolla, Camry, Matrix, Rav4

Pipe Dreams: Lincol Navi and Cadillac Escalade

So what I want for you is: Can I still get a car now, or do I have to wait till I get a job? What car would be best for me (doesn't have to be on the list above)? What type of dealership (used, new, BHPH)? Where should I look for a job (Hey, might as well ask! :P)?

Thanks in advance for being negativity free, Loves. Blessings to all those who answer!!

  1. you should wait until you find a job and get back on your feet before you buy a new car.

Like you said, unemployment pay will run out eventually, leaving you unable to make your payments, dragging yours and your brothers credit scores down.

Plus, its going to be really hard to get financing without a steady income.

    good luck!

  2. I will tell you from experience.  With a 499 credit rating and no job, you will not get a new, or even a newer car.  Even the bad credit places require that you have a job.

  3. Better stick within your budget. Sorry, but your history isn't exactly stellar, so if something goes wrong, why drag your brother down.
