I have a dwarf hamster that gave birth to a litter of 4. Is it possible to keep them all with the mom and dad forever or should I get a new cage for the young or find them a new home? I read that dwarf hamsters can live well together unlike syrians so help!!

  1. i had a guinea pig have babies and the dad ended up attacking the babies. we had to take the dad out but the mom was fine with the babies.

i know hamsters are different but they're both rodents so they might behave similarly.

  2. most dad hamsters eat there young,so if you want them to stay alive take him out.the babies can stay with mom til about 4 weeks. they will start to  bredd shortly after this time.you could try sexing them  to keep fem with fem and males with males but when they are that young it is very hard to do. i would give them to a petstore or find good homes for them so you dont chance having any more

  3. My Teddy Bear hamster gave birth to four hamsters too.  We had to keep them with her for a little while for their nourishment, but I had to be careful not to pick them up because mother hamsters sometimes eat their young.  I would separate them because I kept my new baby hamsters together, and when they got older, they fought with each other.  (They were all the same gender).

  4. They can live in same-s*x groups, but the males and females cannot live together. They will have litter after litter, and you will have hundreds of tired, stressed, unhealthy hamsters. Your female is probably already pregnant again if the male is still in there. Take him out, and when the pups are weaned, you can introduce the males to the father.

  5. You should keep the males & the females separate. Other wise you'll end up with a ton of inbred hamsters. That's just not OK.

  6. no don't keep them all together....they'll keep multiplying...if you want to keep them all, keep the males and females seperate

  7. That would be an awesome cage only because it would give them plenty room to run! But on the other hand they both might get bumble foot....; which is where their feet get so swollen that it hurts to walk and the foot can get infected! So i would HIGHLY recomend a plastic cage with wire walls but plastic levels or floor!
