Question:

Can I still use my bank account?

I opened a bank account with Wells Fargo when I first got my job back in November. I since then quit my job in April and therefore I stopped depositing money becuase I had no more money coming in. I think the last time I checked like a week ago I have like two bucks combined with my savings and checking's account.

Now my dad wants to wire me some money to my bank account but won't the bank charge me and take away some money for not having or using my bank account in like 4 months already?

  1. That's unlikely unless you have a really strange account. An account has to be inactive for 2 years I think before they even can think about messing with it, and even then, the State gets involved. There shouldn't be a charge for receiving a wire transfer. There sometimes is for sending one. You can just call and ask. Don't be shy or afraid of the bank. They work for you, and they are generally very understanding of people new to banking. Wells Fargo is a decent outfit in general.

  2. If your account has not been closed then, yes, you can still use it. With your last job you had direct deposit, but that setup wasn't the only feature of that account. When your direct deposit stopped when you quit that job your account did not become inactive simply due to lack of deposited funds.

So, just check and see if it is still active, and if it is you can use it as you are allowed. A transfer from your dad should work just fine, and is a great way to get funds from one area to another without the huge charges of Western Union or the like.

Good luck and have a nice day.
