Can I still use my snow chains after they've rusted a bit?

I know it may be a dumb question but my chains weren't cleaned very well last year and are now a little rusty. Is it still safe for me to drive on them?

  1. As long as the rust is cosmetic (on the surface.)

But repair or replace any worn links or latches on your tire chains - if any were to break, you could damage your fenders or

rip out brake lines.  You can also buy a link repair kit, consisting of a split link which you clamp or hammer closed to effect the repair.

After use, spray your chains with WD-40 to keep a light anti-rust lubricant on the metal.   Your chains will appreciate the attention and give you years of service.

  2. If there are no cracks or breaks in them spay them with a little WD-40 and let them sit for a while before you use them.

  3. sure they will work fine. as always give them an eyeball before you use them

  4. Yes,go for it.  As long it is surface rust, there shouldn't be any problem.

  5. Yes but inspect them for worn links. The rust will not be a problem, but a near ready to brake link is.

  6. Unpainted steel is going to rust. Tire chains should always be inspected before putting them on.
