Question:

Can I still work at a bank if...?

When I was about 5 or 6 I had a joint account with my mom @ a bank in the US. Apparently, my account was closed like 1 or 2 yrs later due to the fact that my account was overspend like $600. I never really understood this until now that I am trying to build up my credit and get a job. One of my friends has invited my to work for this bank but I don't know if this previous issue will affect my chances of getting hired.

Also, does that affect my credit (because that was sent to a creditor ...this is how i found out). Its not a scam, because my brother who remembers this perfectly says its all true.

Thank you.

  1. If your were five or six years of age your name would not have been listed on an  a "joint" account as you were a minor and not able to legally sign for anything.  Ask your mother.  You should contact one of the three credit reporting agencies:  1. To see your credit report and 2.  If anything negative is on it and you were under the legal age to have them remove it.

  2. Um children can not have a joint bank account with anyone. And assuming you are an adult now, even if they could it would be long gone by now.

  3. ok for one... You can be a minor and be a joint on a BANK account as long as the Primary is over 18, because the Person over 18 would be responsible for the minor and the account if it was overdrawn.

So with that said you need to dispute that on your credit report saying at the time you were under 18 and therefore, you could not engage in a legal contract.

    Ok to answer your question...

it depends on how its affecting you, if it's on cheq systems it wouldn't matter. but if it's on your credit report it could come into play... the reason why is because usually when you work for a financial institution you have to be bondable... but even if you have credit problems you can still be bonded...you just have to give a satisfactory answer to why you have a collection account on your report... but I doubt something this old would be a problem.

  4. If you were a minor when this happened, it should not be a negative against you. Get a copy of your credit reports- it's free! You need to know what's on there, and dispute anything that happened when you were a child! I've seen parents use their kid's ssn to get credit, usually utilities like phones and electric. The child has no idea until they apply for their first car note, credit card, apartment or job.

    Good luck!
