Question:

Can I stop members from deleting their own posts?

We have a very paranoid member in my Freecycle group who posts wanted posts with very dramatic stories and then after a day or so, she deletes them from the group, claiming people are stalking her. We rely on archives to help keep track of who posts wanteds when - as we have a 30 day rule that says you can't repost your wanted post within 30 days - (or we get greedy people flooding our site with the same wanted posts every day.) Then she reposts the wanted within 30 days. With 2500+ members, and her using multiple id's, it's getting hard to keep track of things.

I have not see anywhere how we can avoid this in the management section, so i thought i'd ask here.

thanks for the info

  1. Since members cannot be denied the privilege to delete their own posts, it might be in the best interest of the group to remove her from the group.  It sounds like you have been very accommodating to her.  Most group owners warn a member privately about rules and do remove them after rules have been broken over and over.

  2. No, you can't stop them from deleting their posts, but I'm pretty sure the deletion will show up under the "manabement" section moderators and owners can see.

Are all your new members on moderation? That way you can head off these posts before they go out. And if they don't go out, maybe she will give up.

I take people off moderation when they have been a member for at least 30 days, and submit a properly formatted OFFER post. It is pretty easy, and has caught a lot of potential problems.

  3. the only way to prevent members from deleting their own posts is to close the archives-closed archives, they cant get to their own posts to delete.

members have the right to delete posts since the are the actual owner of them.

if closing the archives is not an option for your type group, start saving the posts to your own e-mail to keep that record.
