  1. Yes you can. Here is more info about it:

    "Join the mailing list only:

Yahoo! Groups recommends that you join a group via the group’s page. But if you want, you can simply sign up for the mailing list for the group. When you’re only on the mailing list, you don’t get access to all the group's web features (Photos, Files, Links, Polls, Calendar.)"

    http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/groups/...

Send a message to one of the following mails to subscribe:

    GROUPNAME-owner@yahoogroups.com

    GROUPNAME-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

  2. Yes!  For most groups, you can send a blank e-mail to [groupname]-subscribe @ yahoogroups.com  Replace [groupname] with the name of the group you want to subscribe to.

So for example, if you wanted to subscribe to a group named YahooAnswers*, you would type

             YahooAnswers-subscribe @ yahoogroups.com

Some other e-mail commands you can do with yahoo groups:

    Unsubscribe

    [groupname]-unsubscribe @ yahoogroups.com

    Mail group owners/moderators

    [groupname]-owner @ yahoogroups.com

    [groupname]-digest @ yahoogroups.com

    [groupname]-fullfeatured @ yahoogroups.com

Be warned if you subscribe by e-mail only however, that you may not get messages if yahoo decides your e-mail is bouncing for whatever reason.

*I don't know if this is a real group or not, it's just an example.

**Yahoo munges e-mail addresses in this area, so I've added spaces before and after the @ to these addresses.  Please make sure to remove these spaces if you are copy & pasting.
