I graduated this year and I am going to college for early childhood education. I want to substitute teach on the days I don't have school. What are the requirements for substitute teaching in Tennessee?

  1. Call Human Resources in the school district where you want to substitute teach.  Different school districts have different rules.  Here you would not have enough college credits, but some places would let you sub.

  2. You need to contact the Office of Public Instruction in Tennessee. Good luck.

  3. Tennessee teaching credentials go through their Office of Teacher Licensing (http://www.state.tn.us/education/lic/)

Tennessee Department of Education web site:  http://www.state.tn.us/education/

According to the National Education Association for TN:

    "Tennessee

The state DOE has guidelines for substitutes. Substitute teachers are used to replace teachers on authorized leave or to fill temporary vacancies as defined by the state board of education and granted under written local school board policies. All substitute teachers are employed by the director of schools and paid by the board of education of the school system in which substitute teachers are used. TEA conducts professional development sessions for substitutes upon request by school systems. The four-hour session covers "do's and don'ts" for substitutes, classroom management, and being a professional in the workplace. Some school districts provide substitute training and require interested individuals to attend this training before their names are placed on substitute lists."

    Good luck!
