  1. Shin splints occur due to the shock tremors that travel up your legs due to the constant impact caused by running. Swimming is perfect, because there's no impact. Bicycling is another option.

  2. Yes you can swim when you have shin splints. Because Shin splints are caused and made worse by high impact activities such as running swimming will provide an opportunity for you to rest while still maintaining your aerobic fitness and muscular strength.

  3. I am always surprised when people still suffer with shin splints and don't seem to know either the cause nor the cure.  Shin splints are caused by muscle imbalance. The front muscles are weak and the calves are strong.

The way to correct Shin splints is to strengthen the muscles at the front of the legs. Lie face down in bed with your toes hanging over the edge. Pull your toes upward against the resistance of the mattress. Try to work up to 3 or 4 sets of 5 – 10 reps each.

There are other variations of this, such as heel walking, hanging a paint can on your toes, or using the angle iron on bleachers to slip your toes under.

    Good Luck

  4. Swimming is a great alternative to running for most injuries. Shin splints is definetly one of those injuries. If you get bored with swimming try aqua jogging. God to the deep end of the swimming pool and just run. You have to keep nearly perfect running form to keep your head above water so it is a little difficult to get used to but once you do it can really improve your running outside of the pool. Good luck with getting rid of the shin splints and have fun.

  5. Swimming is fine- even good for your legs. It has no impact, which is what causes your shins to hurt when you run on cement. If your shins are still hurting you need to ice everyday. When you start running again get extra cushioned shoes and run on grass if it is possible.
