I screwed myself in High School, and now I have to go to a Community College here in NY, but I DO NOT want to be there for longer then a year. I want to switch out after 1 year and hopefully go to Marist College. Can I do that? Switch out to a better school after 1 year? I dont want to miss the entire REAL college experience. I cant go to Marist for 2 years, thats obserd, and I dont want to be at a community college for 2 years. So, can I switch after a year?

  1. No, very likely you can't.  If you screwed up in college, your GPA is probably pretty low.  You apply to transfer in the fall, and if you're in your first year of community college you'll have at most one semester of grades to send to Marist, who will have to put more weight on your high school grades - one semester of community college just isn't very convincing.  You really need 2 years to build up a solid GPA and convince them you've turn it around and you can handle college.

  2. Yes you can, but look to see what major you are interested in there at Marist, and then take the classes that that major takes at the community college.  That way you won't have to take any other courses and waste time.  Try to do really well in those classes so they can transfer

  3. Transfer your credits you have earned to Marist College. As long as the courses you are taking are 100 or above they willl transfer.

  4. If you did well in high school, you could probably transfer after one year.  Since it sounds like you did not, you will need to spend two years at community college before transferring.  The reason is that before two years, their criteria for accepting transfers are your high school grades and SAT or ACT scores.  After two years, they look at your community college grades, and you don't need the tests.

There is nothing absurd about going to a school for two years.  Some of my best university students have been transfer students.  Sorry about the "college experience", but this is why everyone told you to focus in high school!
