Question:

Can I take Indomethacin twice a day instead of three times?

The doctor gave me Indomethacin to treat my ankylosing spndylitis and it says to take it 3 times a day 8 hours apart. This is a problem for me since I'm not even awake for 16 hours a day, especially since you have to take it with food. It would be much easier to take it just twice a day. How much would this decrease its effectiveness?

  1. Yes, it will be less effective if you decrease the dosage. I strongly suggest, You take them as instructed by your doctor if you wish for the medicine to work.

  2. try it and find out.

  3. Indomethacin is a powerful NSAID, but the way it works to control pain and inflammation comes with constant use over time. Taking your current dose only two times a day, instead of three, would only give you 2/3 of your daily dose. This would not be a good thing.

This is certainly something you want to talk to your doctor about, because he could write you a new prescription that would allow you to take it twice a day (the same daily total, but divided into two doses, instead of three). Also, there's an extended release formulation which you only need to take once or twice a day.

Regardless, you still need to talk to your doctor to get a new prescription. You don't want to start cutting up your pills on your own.
