why would you want to get a 12 months contract, you can now get a rolling contract that has nearly all the features of a normal contract with the added bonus of only having to give 1 months notice to cancel

O2 and Orange are doing these deals now

better still just get a SIM card, and a calling card if you want to call home (wherever that is)

   T mobile do a SIM only contract called a SOLO

350 minutes 650 texts to use in the month on any network

Only drawback is you have to supply your own phone.

But you can pick a cheap one up for a few quid nowadays - a friend might even have one lying about!
