Can I take a backpack carrier on a plane?

Its one of those backpacks you would put your kid in while hiking. I want to use it in the airport so I can't check-it. Anyone taken one on the plane before? If so, did it fit ok in the overhead compartment?

How about calling the airline you're flying with and ask them. They should be able to tell you if you can or can't take it.
