Can I take a bicycle on the train between Newport (or Cardiff) and London Paddington?

Do the mark III coaches still have luggage cars these days? Will I get into a fight with the ticket inspector or guard if I take it on without booking? And do I have to make a reservation?

  1. It is possible to take your cycle on our trains, however there are some restrictions to services arriving and departing from London Paddington. Please contact Customer Services on 08457 000125, option 4, with you travel plans and they will be happy to advice you of any restrictions. You can also book a space for your cycle at any manned station. This must be done at least 2 hours before the train will leave its origin station.

  2. most train operators like you to book in advance, but if you don't it is down to the guard. If the train is full he may refuse but most times you will be able to travel you may also be charged for the bike.

  3. My experience of travelling with a bike on First Great Western is that its not usually a problem - you are meant to book your bike on but they are happy to allow you on if there are no other bookings: just go along to the guards van, open the door and lift it on.

There might be problems at peak times but generally its fine, if however you are restricted to a particular train by your ticket (ie you've booked one of the cheap fares) it might be worth booking your bike on - its free, just turn up at the station a few days beforehand or ring up great western. Its not worth the risk of potentially having to choose between catching the train and transporting your bike.

  4. Yes, there is rack for bikes in the 'TGS' vehicle (Coach A) on High Speed Trains, Adelantes (which occassionally turn up on that route) have a rack in the crumple zone behind the driving cabs (can't remember which end though)

I think there is space for 5 in HSTs (but could be wrong), it would be a good idea to confirm it along with any peak hour restrictions with FGW on 08457 000 125

  5. I don't think you can take bikes on the new trains but the old style high speed trains have a guard's van at the front.

  6. Log on to greatwesterntrains to find out for sure

  7. I think you still can take a bike with you.

As long as it is not a nuisance for other passengers.
