Can I take a small knife to China?

Question

I'm heading to China (PRC) in a few weeks to teach English for a year or more. During my spare time, I intend to fly fish in Mongolia, if possible. Anyways, my question is..can I take my Leatherman and a small fixed blade knife (3.5in blade) to China? I'm not sure if taking such items into China is legal, and I don't want to take said items unless I know the legality of flying to China with a knife in my checked luggage. I know that Chinese customs have the ability to be anal about nothing, but I've seen little as to the customs regulations concerning a small, non-military and non-fighting knife. Thanks.

Don't bother trying to carry one with you.  Just buy one when you get there.  It will alleviate any troubles you might have with Customs.

Right! Take a chinese made knife exported to America where you purchased it and return it back to China. Seems like you have a bulimic wish to eat bread and rice for 20 years in prison. Buy it over there and stay out of trouble.

More than likely it will get confiscated. I would just mail it to yourself in the mail.

I think you will be able to get away with it.

I was at a temple once and there was an old war hero kind of guy. He had a knife with a blade of 12 inches. The only concern at the time was that they didn't want him to enter the temple with it, plus also you can buy crafted knifes with much bigger blades.

To be honest you can try phoning up the Chinese embassy and asking them but like others said hand luggage is a no no but cargo luggage is ok. And then you get here only take it out with your fishing gear.

no just buy one over there...yo ur flying to china i think ull have enuff money to buy one...avoid getting arrested at an airport

yeah...no. Security will tackle you down and strip check you if you try to bring a knife on a plane.
