  2. Sure, if you want to let the engineers determine the gamma and the thresholds of the black and white toes.

    The best way is to shoot in colour and then convert the images yourself using your skills and eye to determine  how you want your image to look rather than depend upon some guy with a pocket protector.

    To do that you set the saturation on your file to -100 and then save it as a new file name ... like DSC_1234BW and then use the level tool to set the black threshold, with threshold and mid-tone adjustment until you see what YOU like.
