  1. The city partially funds recycling through aluminum.  It's the only item in the recycle bin they actually can make a profit off of.  It's considered stealing, and in the end it costs the tax payers more money to subsidize the local recycling program.

Cities are starting to crack down on this behavior, I've posted an example in the link.  Personally, if I see someone in my garbage, I call the police.  Nothing against you personally, but with identity theft, you can never be too sure what peoples intentions are.

  2. The police say once that the garbage is on the side its free range.

Ask your police officer in you city/ station

    ,

People just don't like it when your going throw their garbage

    :)

  3. I don't want anyone going through my trash. Unless the cans are in a recycle bin I say "no". Even then I would ask the people who have it out. Everywhere is different but I'm pretty sure no one wants strangers digging around.  Especially  in today's world with stolen identities popping up everywhere. Definitely ask first....

  4. It's really a pet peeve of mine when I see people "stealing" my recycled materials when they are clearly set in a recycling bin, which they know I pay for...especially the cans. We have to pay for the recycling option and you are taking the highest value item... which is basically killing the municipal recycling program which needs the high value recyclables to pay for the program... please ask first...

  5. well what if we just  took a couple of cans out.

  6. I have thought about this, too, driving around the city and seeing all the cans in peoples' bins.  I, too, collect aluminum for extra cash, but so far haven't scrounged without permission.  Because I know the city does make money off the aluminum in the bins, I haven't taken any out of bins at the curb.  I did a couple other things instead, to increase my own can collection, and I feel better about these things than scrounging from peoples' bins.

    1.  I noticed one particular house that always had OVERFLOWING bins, trash cans, and all of it was aluminum beer cans, but these people were throwing them out; they weren't in recycling bins.  Turns out it's a bunch of college guys living there sharing rent and they drink ALOT of beer every week (I think AA should also knock on their door).  They were very happy to let me have their cans, though I had to do the dirty work and get the things out.  I also suggested if they weren't going to recycle that they could drop them off at a local church for the Boy Scouts, who also collect them for funds.

    2.  I talked to as many neighbors as I know already--ones I usually say hi to and have conversations, parents of my kids' friends, and so on.  All of them are more than willing to save their cans for me; a couple of people I provide my own "trash" barrel for the cans, and a few others just bag them up and set them out for me.  No problem.  My mother has neighbors who are always partying, too, and they save theirs for me also.

    3.  I house clean for a lady who, along with her daughter and son-in-law, go through ungodly amounts of soda and beer every week; I actually have to pick up weekly from them, there are so many cans.

    4.  A local automotive shop lets me provide a barrel for all the empty cans left by people in their waiting room.  I was in there one day and saw they have soda machines, and asked if I provided the barrel, and came by on a regular basis, whether they'd let me have the empties, since otherwise they'd just be trashed.  No problem!  Although, they do think I am a little crazy!

    5.  It's not very appealing probably, but I discoverd by accident one day that our local park was absolutely vacant on week-days, but that the park and rec staff still had not cleaned up the cans and trash left by people in the park over the week-end.  I can go on Wednesday, walk the trails for exercise, and can easily pick up enough cans off the ground to fill a tall kitchen garbage bag.  Apparently, disc golf players drink alot of beer, too.

  7. you might ask the people if they mind. To find out about the legalities of it, call city hall and ask.
