Can I take my CD writer out from old PC and put in new PC?

When I bought my new PC I figured I wouldn't need a CD writer because my old one had it. My old PC wont work. I was wondering can I take the CD writer out from my old PC and install it on my new one? Are all CD writers universal because I bought my old PC back in 2002, and the new one in 2008.

If it's a hassle I guess I could just buy a new writer since they're only $50.

Thanks

  1. You would be better of buying a new dvd/cd burner they are about $20.00. But if you want to use it then if you have an IDE cable on your new mother board then you should be fine. CD drives are pretty much universal when it comes to reading its drivers.

  2. Yes you can do it but it is hardly worth your time and effort. Buy a DVD rewriter for about $30.00.

  3. yes, you can swap out your old cd writer and put it in your new computer. The thing is, is that it wont be as good as if you buy a new one because that ones writing speed is probably way lower then a new cd writer.

  4. If you want to use your old CD writer, it should be fine.  I built my last computer, and in doing so, I cannibalized some of the components from an older computer.  Windows should recognize your hardware without any problem.  If not, install the drivers from the CD writer disk or find them online if you know the brand and model.  If all else fails, call the manufacturer for support.

  5. why would u mix the old with the new>??
