Question:

Can I take my Ferret outside?

I Just got my Ferret this last weekend from Petco and am wondering if I can take him outside. I would like to keep him with me at all times if possible. Walks to the park, or store (with a special harness and leash) or in a carrier. I believe he is late on his shots, I am taking him next week to a vet for more. If kept away from other animals would this be safe to do or should I wait until he gets more shots? I have seen my sister take hers with her to the grocery store or outdoors but I believe they are up to date on their shots.

  1. You should definitely wait and make sure to keep him away from other animals, especially unvaccinated dogs. Distemper (along with other illnesses) is airborne and the ferret wouldn't have to come into direct contact with the infected animal to be exposed to it. It could be picked up anywhere from the grass to the clothing of an individual who owns a dog that has the virus.

  2. i would wait til your new ferret is current on his shot. i used to take mine out to the park (using harness) and he loves to swim in the little pond there.

do not let him loose inside your car because my ferret got lost inside my car (he crawl in small space by the engine) and he didn't come out for two days.

you can also fill up your bath tub and let him swim too!

  3. You can take your ferret outside, and most definitely do it in a carrier or on a leash.  You definitely need to make sure to have the ferret's shots up to date.

Ferrets love to be able to play outside, but one of the reasons there is so much emphasis on them having their shots up to date is because when you walk ferrets outside, they can cross trails of where another ferret has been prior and if that ferret was sick they can get it.  ECE is what is many times discussed as an equivilant to Parvo and if not caught soon enough can cause a ferret to pass away, and it is a sad way for them to go.

  4. Its a good idea to get all his shots. If he gets distemper it's fatal. And make sure his harness is secure and he can't wiggle out.

  5. Definatly wait until he's had his shots.

you dont want him picking up a nasty illness, although you could carry him out, to get him used to noises and stuff, just dont let him interact with any other animals, or put him on the ground.

    Its only a week !!

    Good luck x
