I'm moving up from Texas to Ithaca, NY for college, and I was wondering if I could take the printer I received with my brand new Macbook on the plane with me as my peace of carry on luggage. The printer is still in the box, has never been opened, and meets all of the requirements size wise (is under 45 inches if you add length, width, and height). It's pretty heavy (under their weight requirements), so I think it'd cost a pretty penny to ship it, and it'd be nice to have as soon as I get there.

  1. If the printer meets the size requirements there's no reason that you can't take it, but you COULD check it... they can put a "Fragile" sticker on it and it'll be fine if it's in original packaging.

And you can take your MacBook on the plane.

  2. Yes, you can take your new printer as a carry on without any problems.

The previous poster was way off, the xray machine will not damage your printer in anyway.  It only damages undeveloped film that has an ASA higher than 800.  Since the printer doesn't use film, there's no issue with it going through the xray.

You should never check valuables, or electronics as they may get lost or damaged during transit.  If you can't take something on the plane with you the best option is to ship it via UPS, USPS or FedEx because you can insure the item against loss or damage.

  3. as long as it doesn't weigh 7kgs or more and it will fit in the overhead compartment then its ok =]

  4. i would carry it on, because they aren't to careful with your checked luggage, even if there is a fragile sticker on it.  also when you go through security you could ask them to inspect it without sending it through the xray machine, because it might damage it, because when you send film through the xray machine it exposes it, and it might mess up the printer.
