Basically I'm 16 and Im going to be doing all of my flight training and take my written exam at an airport in North Carolina. (mainly because it is alot cheaper than in New York) But during the time that I am there I will not be 17. So I am planning on going back to where I live in New York and taking my oral and practical exam there when I turn 17.

I want to know if this is possible?

Thanks a lot everyone!!

  1. Yes you can - if your instructor signs you off to take your pratical and oram test it can be done by any FAA examiner from California to New York.

  2. There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing that, just be sure to spend some time and learn the area where you will be doing your check ride. It makes a world of difference if you know the area, know different frequencies, airspace's, weather patterns. Basically, you want to know the area.

I learned to fly in Colorado, got my private and then went to Arizona to get my instrument. I knew how to fly, I had about 100 hours at the time but I was absolutely lost. I could navigate my way from one place to another if I were doing a cross country through the area or something like that, but to just go up and buzz around in a new area is tough. If I was told to run north, I had no clue which way was north without looking at the dg. Simple little things like that can really throw you a curve ball, and thats the last thing you want on a check ride.
