Our home was burglarized and when the robbers threw stuff in a bag or pillowcase (whatever they used) some of my stuff was found, like one earring and broken, can I have it melted and design a new ring?

  1. Yes.  You just have to find a jewelry shop that makes jewelry.  Not all jewelry stores do.  And just because they do repairs doesn't mean they can make something new.  Check your local Yellow Pages and call around.  Chances are there's a jeweler in your area that can do it.

  2. Yes, it is a possibility for gold with a higher carat than 10k.  But the cost of melting, design and remaking will be significant.  Unless you have many pieces of considerable weight... it might not be worth the cost and/or hassle.

I used to work at a custom jewelry store and one of the biggest problems with custom jewelry is the miscommunication of ideas with the jewelry designer.  I'd say about half the time the final result isn't "exactly" what the client had in mind.

    Sorry about your losses.
