My cat has a thryroid problem and is taking Tapazole (methimazole). I have the pills but he isn't eating them or spits them out. I heard you can make it into a liquid or a topical thing you can put on their ears. My question is: Can I take the pills I already have to a compounding pharmacy to make it into a liquid? Or does the compounding pharmacy have to contact the vet and I'd have to buy more medicine?

  1. You will have to get a new prescription.  The concentrations are different in pill form and you can't just make a liquid out of it.  Talk to the vet and see if a liquid is an option.

  2. What I used to do with my cats was take the pills and crush them into a powder, then I mixed it with a wet food, my cats NEVER get wet food, so when I offered it to them, they went crazy and eat it right up regardless of whatever medicing is in it.

There is another way to give a pill to a cat, and this is my favorite way because for me it is easier.

What you do is take the scruff of the back of the neck and grab it (just like when the mother carries her kittens), then what you do is open the cats mouth, and put the pill as far back as you can (DO NOT SHOVE IT DOWN HER THROAT, JUST PUT IT IN HER MOUTH), once its there, close her mouth (remember to keep holding onto the scruff), and start rubbing her throat up and down, this rubbing action on her throat will MAKE HER SWALLOW the pill.

Good luck, I hope this helps!

  3. Depends on the pharmacy.  You have to ask them.

  4. you can do all of that or you can just crush it and sprinkle it on a small amount of food. hospitals crush pills all the time for patients who cannot swallow orhave tubes in their throats. try sprinkling it on a small piece of turkey.
