I would like to teach Math at my local community college. Can I do this with a Masters of Science Mathematics Teaching (I think this degree is more geared towards secondary education teachers), or do I have to have the MS Mathematics?

If I get a Masters in Education (Teaching,Learning, and Curriculum), is there anything else I can do with this degree other than be a teacher?

Thanks!

  1. Of  course  you can teach in college

  2. yes

  3. Yes, you can.  However, most colleges will want you to be pursuing a doctorate while you are teaching.

  4. At many ccs, if you have over 18 (or 24 - depends on the school) graduate level credits in a field as part of that degree, you'll be able to teach it. So if, as part of that math teaching master's degree, you get 18 or 24 graduate level credits in math, you may qualify.

I'd have you contact the community colleges local to you and discuss this with them. College math teachers in many regions are in high enough demand that some colleges are flexible like this. But ask first!

  5. My understanding is that a masters enables you to teach, regardless.  I don't think it has to necessarily be in the specific area of expertise as the masters degree.

Even though your masters is geared toward scientific mathematics, I wouldn't think that would matter.

But this is only speculation. Call the college and ask!
