Question:

Can I teach in Michigan with a TESOL certificate?

Hi there! I'm currently travelling around SE Asia (Thailand right now), and am seriously contemplating getting a TESOL certificate while I'm here. I just graduated from college with an English and Psychology degree. While I realize that I can teach in many places around the world just as a native speaker, I would like the experience of having the certificate, and am curious as to whether or not having it would help me get a job back in the States. I'm from Michigan, but do not have a teaching certificate. If I can't teach, could I still get a job within the public school setting? Or does this certificate not help much? What can this certificate provide me in ways of marketing myself for a job when I get home? How about in other states? Also (sorry there are a lot of questions!) is the certificate more widely "accepted" in some areas over others? For instance, if I got it in the Thailand over the US...does that have any impact on getting a job in the States, or in a more prestigious school abroad?? Thank you so much for all of your help!

  1. First, I'm not sure what exactly a TESOL is, but it sounds like it is some kind of universal teaching certificate?  You may be able to get a job in some states, but Michigan... Michigan is saturated with teachers and has been very badly hit by the economy.  With the auto industry fleeing Michigan, many teachers are losing their jobs as it is.  Districts are being hit pretty hard, even the affluent ones.

In order to teach anywhere in the states, thanks to No Child Left Behind, you must have a valid teaching certification.  There are many programs out there, and if the TESOL is an equivalent program, then you're set!

Bottom line, Michigan is very saturated.  My brother's girlfriend graduated last year with a teaching degree and has been interviewing out of state due to the lack of positions.  My district is one of the wealthier districts in MI, and we've laid off teachers and will be closing a school next year due to lower enrollment, unless there is a drastic change.

States that I know are looking for teachers are the southern states - Alabama, Louisiana, etc.

Whatever you decide, teaching is a great profession, I wouldn't trade my job for anything!  Good luck to you!

  2. I think you can, but yu should look for more information, because TESOL is not a degree, just a certification. I 'd suggest you look for the Michigan education web to get more and accurate info.
