Question:

Can I train an established Hibuscus bush into a tree?

Last November I moved into a home in SLC, Utah. I have absolutely NO green thumb or gardening experience, and have spent the last 6 months trying to identify what the prior owner planted. I recently have discovered that 2 bushes on the side of my house are, I believe, Hibiscus. They're already at least 5' tall, with blooms. Is it too late to train it to look like a tree? If not, how would I do it? Remember, you've dealing with a gardening know-nothing, so be specific! :) Thanks to everyone for their input!

  1. I would wait until the bushes go dormant this fall---better yet, next spring.  Hopefully, you have a main trunk to work with on both plants.  If not, you will have a clump tree appearance, which is OK, too.  Prune horizontal branches that are close to the ground and work you way up until you have trimmed up at least 18 inches off the ground.  Be sure you cut close to the trunk and that your cuts are 90 degrees with the trunk--not at an angle.

Stand back and see if you want to prune higher.  Then you can perform tip pruning to shape the crown.

  2. Sure, I have a Hibiscus tree in my backyard. Just keep trimming off the low branches that are close to the groung and don't over water. That will force the water to go up the inside of the trunk to the leaf and bloom part of the plant.
