  1. The short answer: Yes.

You'll have to be willing to run the risk of scratching the roof of your car.  These scratches can be minimized by placing a towel or blanket or foam pads or something like that between the kayak and car.

You'll need to place a strap around the middle of the kayak, through the doors of the vehicle, that will hold it straight down.  And you'll need a tie at the front of the kayak and the back that tie it to the vehicle's frame (under the bumpers) so it won't twist or slide.  These lines should be tight enough that they sound like music when you pluck them.

  2. you can if you want but its gonna be a hassel to tie it down when a rack is ''user friendly'' and looks better and no chance of doing any damage to the roof.

  3. Yes you can...if you don't mind getting scratches on the roof of your car...

  4. Simple roof canoe/kayak carriers are available. Improvise one. Install round foam pipe insulation on gunnels or under canoe kayak to raise canoe/kayak from roof top. Run sturdy  lines from bow and stern to front and back bumpers. Use a similar line over canoe/kayak and through car window. Do not use stretch rubber hold downs. Make loop knot in end of lines, thread free end of lines through loops. Pull tight! Tie off.Check fastenings after a mile or so. Home Depot or such will have materials you need.

Caution, Check clearances in garage or car port.

  5. you can if you tie it on really tight, but you might ruin the paint job

  6. You can buy a couple of soft pads designed for car toping kayaks and canoes. You just place the two pads on the roof (front and rear) then strap it down. You run the straps over the kayak the though the inside of your car. Make sure you also tie it down front and back to avoid it moving too much. Also with kayaks depending on the length there could be quite a bit of up force, when driving down the highway, putting stress on the straps - another reason to keep it tied down in front.
