Can I transfer from community college to a university?

Due to poor planning I have to go to a community college in Florida. This school has some kind of agreement with the University of South Florida that these credits count there but you can't get a bachelors degree at the college you would have to transfer to the USF for the second 2 years. Since these credits count at that university would they count at other out of state universities?

  1. Most courses 100 level or above -ENG100- will transfer. check wit the college that you want to transfer to and correlate the courses to make sure they transfer.

I had a friend at Lindenwood-MO- that transferred to SIU in IL, she made sure all her course would transfer by getting the course curriculum from SIU. She lived in MO so she took everything she could at Lindenwood before tranferring her credits.

  2. It depends on the school, so I would check the transfer credit policy at the universities you're considering (call and ask).  There's nothing wrong with transferring from community to university, a lot of people do that on purpose to save money (you end up with the degree from the more recognized school, but only pay 2 years of tuition).  Good luck!

  3. Some of them count, but not all.  It is shocking how when you transfer colleges you lose a lot of credits.  I have seen students have to repeat a whole semester's worth of classes and more.  If you complete an AA degree you may have more luck getting those first two years accepted, but there will still be requirements from the new university you would have to meet.  You are FAR better off taking advantage of the agreement at USF to give you credit for the community college courses. Unless you need a particular degree they don't offer.

  4. you have to check out the accreditation credentials of the school you want to transfer to....the level of accreditation is something you find out through the admissions director because they will tell you if your credits can transfer or if they are going to limit the amount of credits you can transfer....some institutions don't accept credits earned at some small business colleges...they use "hours  in-class time" to calculate the quarter or semester system hrs you obtained for the courses you intend to transfer....then they design a plan to help you get your degree....

  5. Most likely, yes they would count at other out of state universities, but the only real way to find out, is to contact the specific out of state universities you're interested in.

As a general rule, if a particular course at an accredited university is fairly equal in content, credit hours, and the school is similar in how it's 'semesters' are run, then usually the course credit will transfer.

Some may, however some may not.  And most universities have a "cap" or limit as to how many credits you can transfer in.
