Can I transfer videos from dvd handycam without using the camera?

I have a sony handycam. I Recorded the videos. For some reason video does not transfer from the camera. There might be some camera problem. The software working's fine. Is it OK if I place the DVD into the DVD drive in my computer and then transfer it using the given software without using camera? Will it corrupt my DVD for the later recording?
