I will be traveling from Michigan to Idaho to hunt Elk. Is it legal for me to bring a rifle, shotgun, and handgun? They will not be loaded in the truck.

  1. I have been traveling with weapons for years.  You need to be cautious with the local laws.  For instance, I have several assault style rifles and have traveled to states that do not like those kind of weapons.  But, as far as I know if you keep them unloaded and in a seperate compartment from you and the ammunition you will be fine.  Going from Michigan to Idaho with hunting rifles, shotguns and hanguns should be just fine as all the states I know allow these kinds of weapons.  Even California (my homestate).  Sometimes driving through a major landmark like hoover dam or through a national forest they would want you to claim what you have.  I drove over hoover dam and the security there was tight, but they had no problem with me and my unloaded and locked m4 in the back.  Good luck with the elk.  Should be beautiful there.

  2. Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986 covers this.

There is a "Safe passage" provision of this law.

Persons traveling from one state to another for a shooting sports event or any other lawful activity cannot be arrested for a firearms offense in a state that has strict gun control laws. If, the traveler is just passing through (short stops for food and gas are OK, staying several nights at a hotel is not),

and the firearms and ammunition are securely locked, unloaded, and not immediately accessible.

    US CODE>TITLE 18 > PART I > CHAPTER 44 > § 926A

§ 926A. Interstate transportation of firearms

Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.

  3. yeah it would probably cause a bit of a collision on the borders....i dunno really look into it more

  4. Call the State police for those areas and your own state and ask about their policy. Most states it is allowed without a special permit. but they do require that the guns action be open and the ammo locked up in a different area of your vehicle.

  5. only if you have a federal firearms license.

  6. It is legal to do so, Just make sure that you have them unloaded in the trunk. If you are stopped by a police officer just let them know that you have firearms in the car.

  7. Yep. As you stated, unloaded. I would recommend a locked case in the trunk or locked area of the car. In some state (California) the ammo has to be in a separate locked box so that is is not easily accessible. Good luck on your hunt.
