I am Russian Citizen, passport was issued in Ottawa. Some people say I will have to exchange it while in Russia to fly back to Canada. Please don't refer me to the consulate, I don't trust those people, have a reason for that. They never returned my call and don't answer e-mails written not in Cyrillic.

  1. No problem. You can travel. I did it myself this year. My passport was issued in NY though. For Russians it does not make a difference where your Foreign Russian passport was issued (in Ottawa, Paris, Berlin and such). However, once you are in Russia you MUST update your Vnutrenii Passport and get it stamped with "Otmetka o vidache zagranpassporta". After that you MUST go to some "Ministerstvo Innostrannix Del" with both passports. They will look at your passports and then they will stamp your Foreign  Russian passport (from Ottawa) with "Otmetka o vidache zagranpassporta vo vnutrennem passporte PROIZVEDENA".... After this you will get back to US or Canada without any problems. (I did it myself) Also it is all free of charge. It is just a pain in the neck to go from one office to another. Both of your passports must be valid and not expired.

P.S. Vladimir, cannot get your e-mail. Anyway, if you have both of your passports stamped already, then there is no need to go to MID to get them stamped again. When you cross the border of Russia on the way back to Canada or USA, Russian officer is goint to look in your Foreign Russian passport to make sure that it is stamped with "Otmetka o vidache zagranpassporta vo vnutrennem passporte PROIZVEDENA". Once he sees it is there there will be no problem for you. He does not care where this "Otmetka" is made; in the counsulate or in OVIR of Russia. He cares only about this stamp in the right place. However, you may call MID in Moscow or in MID of one of the big cities closest to your small town in Russia, to make sure that it is right. From my personal experience; they just look at the stamp and then they let you cross the border, they never ask me where this stamp is placed in Russia or in the consulate abroad.

True, Russia does not aknowledge ANY extensions of Foreign Russian passports. In your case, you did not extend validity of your passport. You just get your passport stamped with this "Otmetka". It has nothing to do with passport extensions. Also Russian Consulate would not extend your passport anyway.

  2. how old is your passport? do you still have enough validity on it? if your passport was issued by the consulate of Russia in Canada? it is valid, not sure why people have said that? i checked many web official pages and did not find anything specific about passport restriction.....

if you wish to come back and perhaps explain yourself a bit better? i will check back with you.

do you by any chance have a visa in your old passport? edit your question with the little pencil under your question, click on it and add if you wish?

    i will come back.
