Question:

Can I travel to the US with my passport issued in Cuba (Phil. Embassy)?

I am a Filipino and I need to renew my passport ASAP because I have to travel to the US (business trip- Sept). We had a new passport policy that needs an appearance. The expiration of my passport is on October and I can not travel to US 6 months prior to its expiration. The nearest Philippine embassy is in Cuba and no visa needed to go there. What I am worried is if my passport has a Cuban stamped on it and my new passport is issued in Cuba, will there be an issue in travelling to the US?

  1. Yes, you need to renew your passport. No there is no problem entering the US with a passport renewed in the Philippine Embassy in Cuba. Do not forget to bring the old passport with the B2 visa. Finally, the DFA is implementing the machine readable passports; that is why you need a personal appearance. They also send the passport application to Manila where it is processed before being returned to Cuba. In all they say it takes roughly one month to process. Hope your trip is not in early September.**

  2. Yes.

Travel to Cuba is not illegal for non-US citizens.

Technically it is not even illegal for US citizens, the latter "just" need a special permit in oder to legally spend any money on the island.
