Can I travel with a passport that has my original name while the name on my ID differs from the passport?

I recently got married about 10 months ago overseas and I chose to keep my last name but at the same time, add my husband's last name as well. About a week ago, I decided to add my husband's last name to mine here in the states. My driver's licence/id, social security card and bank information now read my First and last name along with my husband's last name. My question is, will there be a problem at the airport if I were to travel overseas using my passport with my old name when the names on my driver's licence and airline ticket differ from the passport? If a problem will occur, can I bring other documents and/or ID's to prove my identification?

  1. In a word no.........

Your passport, tickets, and ID must match.  Your tickets are worthless until you correct your identity documents.

  2. I was going to say it wasn't a problem as I have travelled with some ID in my maiden name and some in my married name but The main problem is the airticket - it needs to be the same as your passport(for international travel)  - you need to contact immigration and/ or the airline and see if it will be an issue. Maybe the simplest/ fastest and cheapest solution would be to ask the airline if they can reissue the ticket in the name that matches your passport.

  3. Everyone else who answered has already said it, but I'll reiterate.  Passport and airline ticket MUST MATCH - they don't care about anything else.  I've done similar, with half my ID in my married name and half in my maiden name.  For overseas travel, foreign countries will look at only ONE piece of ID and that is your passport.  Get your plane ticket re-issued to match the name in your passport or you'll be spending waaaaaaaaaay more time with airport security than you ever wanted to!

  4. Yes, it can be a problem if the name on the TICKET differs from the name on your PASSPORT, particularly with all the security these days.

The best thing to do then is to have your ticket printed up to reflect what is on your passport (That is your photo id, you do not need your driver's license.)

You may want to change your passport to reflect your married name. This would also make things less of a hassle in the future.

  5. The name on your ticket has to match the passport name.
