Can I turn my basic dvd player into HD or better quality somehow?

Unfortunately that is not possible. From a hardware and software standpoint, a basic DVD player is equip with neither the required hardware or firmware.

However, to increase picture quality, use fewer connections between the DVD player and the TV and chose high quality connections as well. Try using component input, optical connection for sound, etc to optimize your current set up. But also remember, these options depend on your setup and the connections that your tv/receiver is capable of accepting.

You can't turn your regular DVD player into an HD player, but you can try to optimize what you have. Try using the highest resolution output your DVD player uses, it might even use progressive scanning resolution. This might mean using component cables.

You won't get near HD quality but it will look better.
