Can I upgrade a 2003? GT Agressor 2.0 to disc brakes?

I bought second hand a cheap GT. Painted like Agressor but it isn't when I saw the blue paint underneath the black/orange paint. But GT used this frame extensively up and down their range. At the end of the chainstays is just a small hole about M8 size on both sides. Could I mount the callipers there?

  1. It looks like your bike doesn't have disc brake tabs. As most braking is done with the front wheel, you could could put a disc on the front and leave the rear as a V-brake, many bikes from the early 2000's were built like this so your bike wouldn't look out of place if it only had one disc. There's a few different brands of disc conversion kits available that will either bolt, s***w or clamp onto the rear dropout/chain stay/seat stay in many various ways, these kits have various reviews from good to bad and they can also damage frames by adding extra pressure to these frame parts that weren't meant to have brake adapters attached. Disc tabs could be welded onto your aluminium frame but you'd need someone like a frame builder to do it and the costs of doing this would be very high and not worth it. If you don't have disc compatible hubs then you'll have to get some new wheels that have them. The costs of going disc on both wheels mightn't be worth it on your old frame by the time you pay for new wheels with disc hubs, a disc brake set and a conversion kit, that is unless you already have some of the above parts. Second hand bikes with in reasonable condition with discs brakes already attached can be found for sale at cheap prices.

  2. you can get disc tabs welded on and then use just need hubs that have disc tabs or and if your using hydraulic brakes you need new levers

  3. This bike doesn't have mounts for rear disc brakes. Those holes are for mounting racks.
