Can I use 'Dream' and 'Imagine' similarly?

So if I want to make a sentence, like

I imagine a better future. OR I dream a better future.

which one is the correct use?

  1. In this instance, both work interchangeably.  


  2. Both, except in the second you need "of" after "dream."

    Dream and imagine are synonyms.  The better choice is the second sentence.  Imagine seems to convey lack of seriousness or the possibility that you may be wrong about something.  For example: "I imagine I see bigfoot."

  3. The verb 'dream' needs 'of' or 'about' after it.

    I dream of having a better future.

    I imagine a better future (fine).
