Can I use Cat5e as a telephone cable?

In my office, we are currently subscribed to four phone lines (one of them is a DSL) and a fax line, making 5 in total.I have a thousand feet of Cat5e networking cables, and they have eight wires in them. Am I able to use Cat5 cables to serve a telephone wire? And is the Cat5 able to cater to four lines and I'll use a separate one for DSL?

If my assumptions are wrong, please tell me how I am able to use Cat5 as a telephone cable.

  1. sure, cat5e is just a bit more expensive than common telephone wire.

    blue/white is line 1

    orange/white is line 2

    green/white is line 3

    brown/white is line 4

Phone wires are ALWAYS paired, so you have 4 pair wire, not 8 conductor.

  2. Yep go for it mate, what you've said is ok to do....however it is rather expensive cable to use for just speech !!!

  3. Sure you can use it.  Here is a tutorial on how to do it.
