Okay, so I have a Wireless Laptop. I am staying with my friend for two weeks, and I am bringing my Modem and Laptop to his house. His area does not support Broadband and only supports Dail Up, even though I normally use Broadband. What I wanted to ask, will I be able to connect using Dial Up? I have never connected to the internet using dial up before, but I want to since I can't have Broadband. My Laptop is Wireless, but he has a Phone-Line too, so would it work? I have a cable modem, and I am with Eircom Broadband. I just want to use Dial Up but I can't work it .. oh and how do I get the username and password from the ISP?

  1. You need to make sure you have the right pluggy-hole in your computer, which I suspect you do (unless you have one of them Apple Macbook Airs, heh heh).

Then, the big problem: your ISP account (or some buddy who'll let you use his/her ISP account) has to give you a local dialup NUMBER for that area AND a userid and password! IF your ISP will let you dial in on your current account, then all you have to do is, look on the website for a dialup number and check for local dialup numbers: all you need do is contact your ISP and ask whether you can use your current account for dialup access! (That is, current ISP userid and password, local phone number for where you're going to visit: okay?)

Else, ask a friend if you may sneak in and use her or his dialup account! Ask for her or his dialup userid and password. Big imposition! Then find a local dialup phone number for the place you're going to visit.

Either way, you'll have to go through the New Connections wizard to set up a new connection for a dialup account on your computer, then connect through that. Remember, when you get back home, to make sure the dialup Connection is NOT defined as the "default" connection anymore!

  2. To use dial-up, you will need a regular phone line modem.  (Your laptop probably has one installed already.) The Cable modem will do you no good.  Leave it home.

In order to use dial-up, you have to have an dial up ISP. They start at about $10 a month and go up.  You can not dial up the Internet for free.  You get the username and password when you sign up for the dial up service.

Also, wireless does not work with dial-up.  And only one computer can use it at a time, so if your friend already has a computer hooked to dial-up, you can not use your computer at the same time.

If your friend already has dial-up, you should be able to use his/her account for the two weeks you are there. You would install the software needed to connect to their ISP, connect the phone line, and dial in with their name and password.  Once in, you can go to Yahoo or wherever and then simply open your own accounts and mailbox from there.

  3. yes you can if you have the correct port in the laptop
