Question:

Can I use Lysol on my rats' plastic shelves?

I am cleaning out their cage today and was wondering, if for a change, it would be safe to use Lysol Disinfectant Spray on their shelves instead of just soapy water? They sometimes pee and poo on the shelves, and I would like to really clean them well. If you have any better ideas as to what I could use, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  1. I use regular ol' dishsoap and hot water for every day shelf wiping off and and weekly cage cleaning.

  2. You need to buy an animal-safe disinfectent. Most pet shops carry it- they're effective at removing grime and killing germs but are totally non-toxic to your animals. You just need to source it! Until then, soap and hot/boiling water will be good enough to clean.

DON'T use a household or generic disinfectent- chances are, it would have only been tested on human skin, not animal skin and/or digestive systems (if they decide to chew/l**k the shelves) or breathing systems of rats- they have very delicate lungs and breathing in unsafe disinfectent could cause problems.

  3. use vinegar then wash it really good.

  4. I use bleach and hot water and then run them under the shower till they dont have anymore bleach on them.

  5. Lysol is not a good idea. It will hurt their respiratory system and you will end up having to pay for antibiotics & vet visits.

I recommend using vinegar & water. It's safe for the rats & cleans very well. :]

  6. no poisonous

  7. Lysol can kill them; stick to useing Dawn. It does clean it really well, even if you don't think it does.

Disinfectant sprays are hazardous to all rodents.

  8. I would read the label very carefully first and make sure it says that it wont seriously warm animals. And If you do use it, I would make sure to rinse them very well and after soak them in hot watter to kill whatever may be left. Hope I could help
