Can I use R134A in a R22 system? the full charge is 14.6 oz low side 150psi high side 350psi

The R22 is a window A/C unit . I have heard of people useing R134a in them.. but will it work ? and is it safe ?

  1. yes, the problem arises in charging the system you must charge with liquid refrigerant. Can you charge a system with R-22 already in the system NO because you must add a synthetic oil. Ester oil works well 134 actually decreased the electric bill on one house of ours for cooling. The charging will be for a 1.5 ton unit (heat pump) 40-45 low 125-130 high side it has not caused and issue and such many peer reviewed articles suggest it is a dirrect replacement but not as effective because its pressure variance low to high is less. How ever it will cool and keep your house cool and reduce electrical bills as proven in one house. If I have another house i will convert the unit aswell. Just experience here. The compressor continues to operate normally. how much oil 134a will not react with mineral oils thus wont carry then through the system but ester oil will lubricate the system same as used in R-12 systems. R-12 is viably the same as R-22. if u use 1 8 oz can ur good. A 30 lb tank of 134a will provide 3-4 recharges of the whole system.
