I bought a new house and I saw that the phone cable is Cat-5e cable. The jacks are standard RJ-11 phone jacks. The cable company came by and hooked up a VOIP phone/modem to a phone jack and all my phones in the house work like normal phones. Can I plug and adapter into the RJ-11 jack and use an RJ-45 cable for my home computer network or can I change out the jack to an RJ-45 and make it work?

  1. If it really is cat5e in the walls, it should not be a problem to swap out the wallplate with an rj45 port.  I don't know of any rj11 to rj45 adapter however.

  2. NO.

    rj-11=phones

    rj-45= ethernet. >>> = VOIP

your question needs to be cleared up some.
