I am working on changing my bike from a triple crank to a double and i was wondering if I can use my old shifters for a while.

  1. Yep....no problem.  Just crank down the high limit s***w on the front derailleur and try not to mash the shifter too hard when you shift onto the big chainring.   It would be a good idea to get a double front derailleur, but try out the triple you have and see if it works ok.  If not, pick up a new derailleur made for doubles (it has a narrower cage on it).

You'll need to use the correct bottom bracket for the new crank, of course, but the shifter won't be a problem.  It's still best to use drivetrain components that are made for each other but you can make this work and be fine.

  2. my bike has that set-up, mostly because i can just take of my bashguard and throw a 3rd chainring on it.

  3. Hm. Maybe. I think the spacing's the same between a triple and a double. Might see if there's some way of limiting your front derailer so you don't inadvertently shift onto that invisible third chainring.
