Can I use a 2nd Edition Chemistry book when the class specifies I need to buy the 3rd Edition?

I'm taking Into to Chemistry. The class description states that I must buy Introductory Chemistry Essentials by Tro. I already have the 2nd edition. Does anyone have the 2 and know if there are any real differences? I really don't want to spend $150 on a book if I don't need it. Thanks!

  1. The odds are that it'll be ok but you might miss a fact or two.

  2. i'd advise u to ask your teacher.

If you are obliged to have the 3rd edition. Try selling the second, and buy the third with the profit..

( usually, the differences in the edition are the page numbers,

like what u'd find in 2nd ed. on page 100 u'll probably find it on a different page in 3rd ed. so it might be hard for u to follow up with class instructions if certain pages are assigned from a new ed that u dont own)

  3. 1- Look to see the date of the edition you  have. If it is more than a few years you my have a problem. Normally you can get away with not buying the book but you do run a risk of an incorrect answer or formula  because of it. 2- Ask the professor (provided he did not author the text) what were the major changes, he should tell you. 3- Call the publisher and ask about the updates , sometimes they will give you enough information to make an informed  decision. Good Luck
